Lionel Allen Mathews

Lionel Allen Mathews, 82, died December 2, 2011.
A longtime resident of the Sandy Cross Community in Oglethorpe County, he was a son of the late Walter and Pearl Bray Mathews and was preceded in death by a son, Buddy Shook. Mr. Mathews retired from the United States Post Office after thirty years and was an active member of the Oglethorpe County Cattleman's Association. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Athens for over fifty years.
Funeral services will be Monday, December 5, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Temple Baptist Church with Dr. Paul Downey, Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Stephens Mathews; children, Richard (Karen) Mathews of Hull, and Brenda Mathews of Smyrna; daughter-in-law, Rita Shook of Watkinsville; two grandchildren, Katie Butler and Tanya Ruark; four great grandchildren, Bentley Fouche, Timothy Ruark, Matthew Ruark and Zachary Ruark.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 3:00 until 5:00 PM at the funeral home.
Flowers will be accepted. Memorials may be made to Temple Baptist Church.
