Linda Burkett Smith died after a short illness March 28, 2017. Linda was born November 5, 1938 in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Edith Carolyn Gabel Burkett and Lowell Bruce Burkett. Linda moved with her family to Abilene, Texas where she graduated from Abilene High School in 1957. She then attended Texas Woman's University, College of Nursing in Denton, Texas graduating in 1961.
Linda worked as a surgical nurse in the Dallas, Texas area until she served as the Operating Room Supervisor for CARE-MEDICO in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1966. Upon her return from Afghanistan, Linda worked at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas leaving to obtain her CRNA at the Anesthesia School at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, New Hampshire in 1972. Linda worked as a Registered Nurse Anesthetist in Boston, Massachusetts for 10 years then moved to Athens, Georgia as a CRNA with Athens Anesthesia Associates, in 1980. Linda retired in 2003.
While living in Athens, Linda met and married Gerald Smith on February 15, 1986. She and Gerald shared themselves and their roses generously. They enjoyed classical music, gardening, travelling, and offering hospitality with great joy within the Athens community.
Linda is survived by her step children, Frank Willis Smith, Mary Margaret Sales and husband, L.H. Sales, and grandson, Jake Sales. One sister, Marge Barnhill, Abilene Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Elliott Smith, her parents, four brothers: Gordon Burkett, Kenneth Burkett, John Burkett, and Terry Burkett, and two sisters: Phyllis Bull, Jeanne Olsen. Aunt Linda will be remembered and missed by many nieces and nephews as well as her great nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Linda's caregiver, James Sanders, for his loving care.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 pm Saturday, April 1, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church, 185 E Hancock Avenue with a reception immediately following.
