Leena Jain died peacefully in the hospital on Thursday, May 16, 2024. She was 67 years old, born on September 29, 1956, in Calcutta, India (formerly Kolkatta). As a young adult, Leena began her studies at the Indaprastha College at New Delhi Polytechnic for Women where she focused on textile and garment design. Years later, friends of Leena introduced her to the love of her life, the late Harsh Jain. They married on November 25, 1988, in New Delhi. She moved with him to Athens, Georgia, shortly after that, where they resided until their final years together.
Leena received her Associate’s Degree in 1993 from Athens Area Technical Institute (now Athens Technical College) in Research Laboratory Technology. After graduating, she worked as a research technician at Rhone Merieux, Inc. (now Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health), as well as both the University of Georgia’s Department of Animal Science and its College of Pharmacy.
In 1997, she began work as a lab technician at USDA,where she served 22 years, with more than 15 years withthe Agricultural Research Service and 7 years with the Food Safety and Inspection Service. She retired full-time in 2019.
In her final years following her husband’s passing in 2018, she lived with her son and daughter-in-law in Lawrenceville, Georgia, where she spent her days with close family, friends, and her beloved family dogs. She was happiest when hosting family and friends for parties and gatherings in their home in Athens with her husband, Harsh, and son, Jay.
She is survived by her son, Jay, and her daughter-in-law, Pooja and her brother, Asjit.
