James Lanier “Rabbit” Whitehead, 78, of Bogart, Georgia, died on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.
Rabbit was born on October 17, 1945 and was a lifelong resident of Madison County. He grew up in Comer, GA and graduated from Madison County High School in Danielsville, GA in 1963. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years. He worked for Bulldog Limousine and MLW All-Phase Construction, but he was mostly known as a farmer and entrepreneur. He was owner of Athens Gold Magazine, Country Motors, Farmers Hardware, and JLW Enterprise.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Gussie Mae Whitehead, and his brother, Ralph Donald Whitehead.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Barbara Martin Whitehead; two children: Lana Whitehead Allen and Marty Lanier (Jade) Whitehead; four grandchildren: Justin Lanier Allen, Bradley Connor Allen, Brittany Taylor Millard, and Whitman Kellan Whitehead; two great-grandchildren: Bryley Grace Millard and Ryker McCall Millard; sisters-in-law Rita Whitehead, Jackie McElroy, and June Martin; brothers-in-law Charles Martin and Terry McElroy; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 10 at Lord and Stephens, West at 1:00pm with Rev. Ray Finger officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
