Lance Jason Wilder, 47, passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2017.
Born in Memphis, Tennessee and raised in Marietta, Georgia, Lance was the youngest son of Donald E. Wilder and Shirley Hardy Wilder. He was an avid baseball fan who was devoted to his Atlanta Braves, and a self described "music junky" and supporter of the arts. Lance received his doctorate from the University of Georgia, where he was also a Senior Lecturer in the English Department. He was a highly regarded teacher who-despite his curmudgeonly exterior-was a caring mentor to his students, always dedicated to their development as scholars and individuals. He also taught in the UGA at Oxford program and served as the associate director in the British and Irish Studies Program. Prior to receiving his PhD, he completed undergrad at Furman University and received his Master's Degree from Baylor University. Having lived in Athens for the past 22 years, Lance was very active in the community and served on several boards including the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission. Most importantly, he was a loving father to his son, Declan O'Brien Wilder who he cherished and celebrated.
Survivors in addition to his parents and son include his wife, Shannon O'Brien Wilder; one sister, Lisa Allred (Andy); one brother, Scott Wilder (Donna); one niece, two nephews and numerous cousins.
