Watkinsville, GA - Klaus Steinbeck, loving husband, dad and doctor of Tree Physiology passed away peacefully Thursday, February 16. He was born in Munich, Germany on December 11, 1937. He was preceded by his parents Fritz and Lieselotte Steinbeck. In 1964 he became a citizen of the US. He is survived by his wife of over fifty years, Phyllis. Also by daughter, Rika Griffeth and children Michael and Brad; daughter, Susan Hatcher, husband Larry and children Austin, Justin and Ford, his wife Lacey and their son, Landrey Trace; daughter, Katie Coffey, husband Darrell and children Jason, Katrina, Hunter and Kala; son, Karl Steinbeck, wife, Julie and children Emily and Hunter McGuire; daughter, Katrina Selvidge, husband Elijah and children John and Mary Kathleen. Klaus has a sister, Ulrike Von Scheliha and brother, Jochen and wife Linda.
Klaus graduated from Richmond Academy in Augusta in 1956, from Arndt Gymnasium in Bonn in 1958. In 1960, he received a Bachelor's degree from University of Georgia and a Master's degree in 1962. In 1965, Klaus received a doctorate from Michigan State University.
For over thirty years, Klaus taught countless students at Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources where his teaching became legendary. In addition to influencing a generation of foresters, Klaus published over fifty articles in various scientific journals.
He will be missed and remembered for years to come.
Funeral services will be Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the Day Chapel of the Athens Botanical Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.
Memorials may be made to Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources or Parkinson's Foundation.
