Katherine (Kate) Harwood, 53, died Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Athens Regional Hospital in Athens, Georgia after a brief hospitalization.
Kate was born October 4, 1960 in Waverly, Iowa, a daughter of Arthur Harwood and the late Nyta Harwood. She was raised in Waverly and Athens, Georgia where she graduated from Cedar Shoals High School in 1978. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia, where she was an active member of the Delta Gamma sorority. Her marriage to Geoff Golembiewski brought her the two joys of her life, Elizabeth and Eleanor. She was a member of Tuckston Methodist Church in Athens.
Kate was a devoted mother, loving sister, and loyal friend. She was a superb cook especially known for her cheese cakes.
Preceding Kate in death were her mother, Nyta Harwood and sister, Laura Phelps. She is survived by her daughters Elizabeth Golembiewski of Iowa City, Iowa and Eleanor Golembiewski, a student at Wake Forest University; her father Arthur of Athens, Georgia; five siblings: Donald (Marco Guevara) of Tampa Florida, John (Kathryn Grossman) of State College, Pennsylvania, Ann Harwood-Nuss (Robert Nuss) of Jacksonville Florida, George (Rita) of Athens, Georgia, and David (Cindy) of Montgomery, Alabama.
A memorial service will be held at Lord and Stephens East Funeral Home (4355 Lexington Road, Athens Ga 30605) at 4:00 PM on Friday, July 25. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Athens Area Human Society or a charity of your choice in Kate's memory.
