Julia "Judy" (Steed) Sloan

October 13, 1930 — June 24, 2014

Julia "Judy" Sloan of Winterville, GA passed away on June 24, 2014 after an extended battle with cancer.
Julia, known as Judy by her friends, was the wife of the late William Heyward Sloan and the daughter of the late Roy and Ruby Webb Steed of Commerce. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Jean Cothran Russell and Miriam Perry and a brother, Billy Steed. Mrs. Sloan was a member of Winterville Baptist Church and the Friendship Sunday School class for many years. Judy was a graduate of Athens Business College and retired from the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service after thirty years of dedicated service.
Judy was a compassionate person who spent twenty years after retirement volunteering at Athens Regional Medical Center. She also would often visit friends and shut-ins at nursing homes, taking them flowers that she grew in her garden. She was an artist who especially enjoyed painting as well as gardening. Judy was also proud to have been second runner up in the 2011 "Mrs. Senior Athens pageant".
Funeral services will be Friday, June 27, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Winterville First Baptist Church with Dr. Phil Wages and Dr. Rick Standard officiating. Interment will follow at Winterville Cemetery.
Survivors include her loving children, William David Sloan (Heather), Lynn Hammock, Nita Norris (Randy), Tim Sloan, all of Winterville; eight grandchildren, Russell Sloan, Ashley Hammock, Trent Hammock (Tasha), Heather, Loran, Allie and Casey Sloan, and Hunter Norris; two great grandchildren, Remington Grace Hammock and Jordan Heyward Sloan; sister, Carol Parker; brothers, Laverne Steed, Larry Steed and Kenneth Steed; special friend Charles Sorrow.
Pallbearers will be Tony Steed, Greg Steed, Alan Parham, Dwight Eberhart, Russell Sloan and Trent Hammock. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Friendship Sunday School Class.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
Flowers are optional. Memorials may be made to Winterville First Baptist Church for building expenses.
Lord and Stephens, EAST, is in charge of arrangements.
