Athens - Joy Wootton, 93, passed away February 6, 2008. A devoted wife, mother, and musician, she was the widow of Dr. Lutian Wootton, professor emeritus of UGA.
She was the organist at Friendship Presbyterian Church for 30 years (1956 - 1986) and taught piano and other instruments to hundreds of students in Oconee County. Mrs. Wootton served other churches for shorter periods including Young Harris Methodist, Princeton Methodist, and St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Joy Wootton grew up in a musical family in Martin, Tenn. during the Big Band era and could play whatever instrument her band-director father, Ottis Parrish, needed. She would play for dances Saturday night and the next morning play for church. She continued to entertain with her piano and stories, celebrating her 90th birthday with a piano concert of popular songs from her youth.
Survivors include her son Dr. Robert Wootton of Athens and Asheville; and several nieces and nephews.
