Our mother, Ms. Joy Ann Worthy Goodman, passed into the presence of the Lord, on Monday, May 18, 2015. She was born in Kaiser, Arkansas on December 12, 1928 to William Robert Worthy and Era Marsh Worthy. As a young girl, along with her four brothers, she had fond memories of growing up in Greenwood, Mississippi. Most recently she was a resident of Morningside Assisted Living Community in Athens, Georgia. Joy Ann was predeceased by brothers, Mr. William Worthy, Mr. John Worthy, Mr. Paul Worthy, and Dr. Jerry L. Worthy of Dallas, Georgia. Joy Ann is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Tracy Minjauw (Jacques) of Marietta, GA; Mrs. Leslie Langley (Danny) of Bowdon, GA; Mrs. Alison Uphold (Lee) of Thomaston, GA; and Ms. Angela Goodman of Athens, GA. She was grandmother to Mrs. Rachel Sleppy (Bob) of Athens, GA; Mr. Benjamin Price (Amanda) of Atlanta, GA; Miss Sydney and Mr. Sam Uphold of Thomaston, GA. Great granddaughters are Miss Finley Sleppy and Miss Elizabeth and Miss Evelyn Price. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Ms. Emily Worthy of Dallas, GA and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joy Ann's earliest career began in Memphis, TN as secretary to the dean of the Medical School at the University of Tennessee and later in 1952 as a flight attendant with Southeastern Airlines. After her marriage to our father, Dr. James B. Goodman of Dallas, GA; she continued her career as a professional secretary in the medical and legal fields in Marietta, GA. During retirement years, she lived in Bowdon, GA where she enjoyed working in an antique store and was much loved by her community of friends.
A memorial service will be held June 11, 2015 at 2PM at the State Botanical Gardens. We wish to thank the staff and residents of Morningside Assisted Living and the nurses and caregivers of Compassionate Care Hospice for touching the life of our mother during her journey. The family will be making a memorial donation to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee in our mother's memory.
