Joshua James Smith, 48, died Thursday, November 11, 2021.  He was born in Athens, Georgia on May 8, 1973.  He spent his elementary and middle school years in Athens, then moved to Houston, Texas where he graduated from Klien Forest High School.  After graduation he moved back to Athens, Georgia where he worked until his car accident on March 19, 1992 which left him quadriplegic.  After a long stay at Shepherd Spinal  Center he attended Athens Tech where he graduated in computer science.  Through all the surgeries and health issues Joshua maintained a great attitude and remained a loving and caring person.  His smile and huge heart will be missed.

Joshua was the son of Karen Peterson Holland, stepfather Greg Holland and the late James H. Smith.  He was the grandson of the late Grant and Julia Peterson and Herald and Helen Smith.  Survivors in addition to his mother and stepfather include a stepbrother Keith Holland and wife Carmen; Aunt Frances and Uncle Gary Grier and Alan, Uncle John and Aunt Wanda Peterson, and Brandi and Erik; Uncle Grant and Aunt Cindy Peterson, and Paul and Wendy;  and numerous close cousins, extended family members, Adam Guest and many other longtime close friends.

A memorial service will be held Friday, November 19, 2021. The family will receive friends at 2:00 pm at the funeral home and the service will begin at 3:00 pm at Lord and Stephens East Chapel.  Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made in his memory to the Shepherd Spinal Center 2020 Peachtree Road, NW Atlanta, Georgia, 30309.
