Joseph Richard Niolon, Jr., of Athens, Georgia, passed away peacefully in his home on November 27, 2022. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama on November 6th, 1945, to Joseph Richard Niolon, Sr. and Rebecca Bradley Niolon. He grew up in Atlanta, GA, attending St. Anthony’s Parochial School and graduating from Marist High School.
Joe was a graduate of Young Harris College, where he met his wife, Susan Manning. They were married in 1966 and lived briefly in Athens and Atlanta before moving to Alpharetta, GA where they raised their three children.
Joe began his professional career in the lumber industry in 1966. “The Maverick” realized the corporate industry was not for him; he founded Niolon Lumber Sales, Inc. in 1982, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary. He also started Gwinnett Lumber Remanufacturing with his children in 2002, which has been in business for 20 years.
Many who know and love Joe fondly say that “God broke the mold when He made Joe Niolon!” He was a man of deep faith, strong convictions, a diligent work ethic, and deep love for his family. He loved hunting and fishing and was proud to foster that passion in his children and granddaughters. He was fiercely proud of his family and was an avid follower of his granddaughters’ accomplishments in sports and academics. He was most proud of his children for growing the family legacy beyond his dreams and expectations.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Rebecca Niolon, his parents in law, Sim and Sarah Manning, and his sister, Bette Niolon Ramsey. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Susan Manning Niolon, his children, Leigh Niolon, Trey Niolon (Phyllis), Simeon Niolon (Rachel Kachur), and his four granddaughters, Lily, Grace, Emmeline, and Lucy.
