Athens, GA - Joseph J. Lands, 91, died September 6, 2010 at St. Mary's Hospice House, Athens, Georgia.
He was born October 11, 1918 in Charlotte, North Carolina, to the late Richard Wesley Lands and Eva Kilpatrick Lands. He was preceded in death in 2005 by his wife of 64 years, Ruby Dover Lands. He was also preceded in death by their son, Maj. Richard Thomas Lands and brothers, Lloyd Lands, David R. Young, Sr., and Jack Young. Survivors include his sister, Forrest Helen Young Adams of Huntsville, Arkansas; brother-in-law, Fred Dover and his wife Mary of Athens, Georgia; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Lands was a graduate of Toccoa Falls College and the University of Cincinnati. He worked for H.B. Maynard Company as an efficiency consultant. He spent 11 years in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, and two years in London. His final years with H.B. Maynard were in Charlotte, North Carolina. From here he traveled thru out the United States on consulting jobs. He retired in 1985 and moved to Athens. Lands was the consummate gentleman, a dedicated member of Central Presbyterian Church, Athens, an avid chess player, and he loved to fish and read.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 2PM at Lord & Stephens East Chapel with Rev. Bob Bohler officiating. Burial will follow at Toccoa City Cemetery at 4:30PM. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to either Central Presbyterian Church or St. Mary's Hospice.
