Joseph Alex Memory III, age 70, passed away on Wednesday, January 4 2012 at St. Mary's Hospice House with Jean, his beloved wife of forty-six years, by his side. He was born in Whiteville, NC on May 29, 1941 to the late Wynette and Joseph Alex Memory, Jr. but lived most of his life in Athens.He attended East Carolina University.Joe had a lifelong passion for cars, was a pioneer in van conversion in the 1970s and later retired from Athens Chevrolet. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jerry, Harold and Dickie Memory and survived by three daughters, Melissa Memory, Heather Memory, and Laird Memory Bunting, one brother, Mitchell Memory, four sisters, Faith Jones, Anne Allen, Judy Emery and Jan Memory, a son-in-law, Matt Bunting, two grandchildren, Augie and Raleigh Bunting, and many faithful friends.
Joe loved being on the water and a good, old western and loved sharing his stories, his songs and giant pots of soup.He taught his daughters to be pragmatic, self-reliant and fearless, the importance of power tools and how to polish their own shoes.He will be remembered for his strength, his courage and his optimism in adversity.
