Athens - JoNan Ritchie Tanner, 72, died April 12, 2008 at St. Marys Hospice House after a long battle with cancer.
Born in Rock Hill, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Frank Telford and Sallie Jo Bird Ritchie and was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Armor.
JoNan was a 1953 graduate of Athens High School and a 1957 graduate of The University of Georgia, where she received her degree in Home Economics. She later returned to earn her Masters in Education and Associate in Computer Science. She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. JoNan taught at Comer Elementary School for a number of years and was later a computer programmer for The University of Georgia for several years. Her hobbies included china painting, bridge and craft works. She was a member of Georgia World Organization of China Painters, Athens Newcomers Club and UGA Alumni Society. JoNan was a member of Beech Haven Baptist Church.
Memorial services will be Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Beech Haven Baptist Church with Dr. Stewart Simms officiating. Interment will be at Oconee Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, J. Bryson Tanner Jr.; son, J. Bryson Tanner, III and his wife, Janice of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter, Terrie Jolyn Tanner-Callahan of Cohutta, Ga.; sister, Leila Campbell of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, J.B. Tanner, IV, Ford Tanner, Frank Tanner and Isaac Callahan; cousin, Dr. Thomas A. Ritchie of Scotsdale, Ariz.; and a number of other cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, April 18, from 5 - 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Marys Hospice House, P.O. Box 6588, Athens, GA 30604; Beech Haven Baptist Church Music or Library Fund, 2390 West Broad Street, Athens, GA 30606; or a charity of choice.
