Johnny Matt Adkins, 72, of Bogart, died June 14, 2022.
Born in Athens, he was a son of the late O’Neal and Evelyn Cook Adkins and was preceded in death by brothers, Wayne and Franklin Adkins.
A devoted family man, Johnny is survived by his wife of 53 years, Deborah McGalliard Adkins; daughter, Jennifer Adkins Dempsey (Jason) and his son, Jeffrey Charles Adkins: grandchildren Claire Dempsey and Tanner Dempsey all of Bogart; brother, Layne Adkins and his wife Nancy of Danielsville. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Helen McGalliard and sister-in-law Elaine Hale, both of whom he loved dearly. There are nieces and nephews, and children, not related, that he loved unconditionally like his own.
Johnny was a proud veteran spending most of his time stationed in Alaska. Johnny worked for his father-in-law for many years at McGalliard’s Engines as a machinist where he specialized in racing and high speed performance engines. A highlight in his career was being on a pit crew for a Busch Grand National race team. He later opened his own business, Adkins Machine Shop in Bogart, and with the help of Robin Collins and Lee Clarke, it continues to be successful after 30 years. They earned a reputation for doing good work and being dependable and honest. He enjoyed hunting and fishing while having a deep appreciation for wildlife and it’s surroundings.
Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting Johnny, knows how much he loved his family and friends, and how loved he was in return. He also loved the Lord, and embodied what it means to be a Christian.
