Johnie Torice "J.T." Savage

Johnie Torice "J. T." Savage, died Thursday, December 8, 2011 at the age of 89 at his home surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Mr. Savage was born June 9, 1922 in Oconee County, Georgia. He is the son of the late Harrison and Montine Savage and was also preceded in death by his son, Donnie Savage six brothers and a sister. He was married to his lifelong love, Betty Savage for 65 years.

Mr. Savage's accomplishments are many. His greatest being a loving devoted family man. He will forever be remembered as a good husband, daddy and granddaddy. As a WWII Veteran he was drafted into the U.S. Army at the age of 20. He completed his basic training in the Mojave Desert, was then sent to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri where he worked as a supply clerk. From there he went to New York City and boarded a ship to London, England where he was on D-Day. Sixteen days later he went to France where he fought in the 195th Field Artillery Battalion. Mr. Savage worked as a mechanic at Wellington Puritan Mills in Athens and Eatonton for 36 years. After retiring from Wellington Puritan, he then worked as a mechanic for Athens Packaging Company for 10 years. He was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church. He loved camping, traveling, fishing and spending time with his family.

Survivors in addition to his wife, Betty Savage include: daughter, Marie (Joe) Kettle of Arnoldsville; son: Kenneth Savage of Arnoldsville; son: Mike Savage of Comer; son: Johnny (Lynn) Savage of Watkinsville; son: Wayne (Loria) Savage of Comer; and sister, Myrtis Roberts of Watkinsville. J.T. and Betty have eight grandchildren, Mandy Kettle, Brian Savage, Dustin Savage, Rachelle Funcke, Tiffany Brown, Brittany Savage, Christopher Savage, and Stephanie Savage; two great grandchildren, Lexie Shuler and Gracie Brown; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Sunday, December 11, 2011at 4:00 p.m. at Lord and Stephens East Chapel. Burial will follow at Athens Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Bobby Savage, Brian Savage, Christopher Savage, Dustin Savage, Michael Doster, and Mickey Smith.

Visitation will be Saturday, December 10, 2011 at the funeral home from 6:00- 8:00 p.m.

The family would like to offer sincere thanks to United Hospice for the loving care provided to J.T., Betty and the entire family. He was respected by all who knew him and will be missed by all who loved him.
