John Thomas Wilkins, 80 died at his residence Wednesday, April 11, 2007. He was born in Columbia, Louisiana, May 27, 1926. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 - 1947; attended Southern Methodist University on a football scholarship; had an outstanding career in sales, photography and judging of state and national beauty pageants; and wrote a book that was published. He was an inspiration to all.
John was predeceased by his father, James Climent Wilkins; his mother, Hester Bibb Yarborough; his brother, James Climent Wilkins, Jr.; his sister, Gloria Wilkins Witteman; and his nephew, Gary Paul French.
Survivors included his sisters, Mary French of Monroe, Louisiana and Janie Wilkins of Fernandina Beach, Florida; brother, J.D. Yarborough of Memphis, Tennessee and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, East Chapel in Athens, Georgia, on Sunday, May 6, 2007 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Burial ceremony will be at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia on Monday, May 7, 2007 at 2:00 p.m.
