John Waters

John S. Waters, 74, of Athens, loving husband, father, grandfather, and coach passed away on August 31, 2016.

Born March 7, 1942 to J.S. and Evelyn Waters in Reidsville, GA. He graduated from Claxton High School as a three sport letterman. He later earned B.S. and M. Ed. Degrees, as well as two athletic letters, from Georgia Southern University. In 1976 he received his Ed. S. from the University of Georgia.

John began his coaching career in 1965 at Mary Persons High School, serving as Assistant Football Coach and Head Basketball Coach. After four years, he moved to Macon to coach at Willingham-Southwest High School.

In 1972, John became the first Head Football Coach and Athletic Director at Cedar Shoals High School where he compiled at 102-41-3 record in 14 seasons. Six of his teams made the state play-offs and 52 players received college scholarships. John retired in 1995 after spending 30 years in public education.

John became a part-time instructor in 1996 at the University of Georgia in the Department of Health and Human Performance. After retiring from teaching in 2005, he worked as a Realtor with Hadaway Realty until 2014.

John coached the Georgia High School all-star game in 1978. He served as: State Football Chairman of the Georgia Athletic Coaching Association, President of the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association, and was a member of the Executive Committee of the Georgia High School Association. He was awarded a lifetime membership to the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association and in 2007 was inducted into the Athens Athletic Hall of Fame.

John was a member of Milledge Avenue Baptist Church where he served as an ordained Deacon. He was an avid golfer, tennis player, and enjoyed traveling to more than 30 countries with his wife, Debbie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J.S. and Evelyn Waters.

He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 50 years, Debbie, son Kevin Waters (wife Heather), and grandchildren Anna Grace and John Davis, of Bishop, daughter Dee Dee Bennett (husband Tap) of Athens, and sister, Beth Johnson (husband Neil and daughter Adair) of Savannah.

John was an amazing man who served as a father-figure and mentor to many of his players throughout their lives. Though he treasured his accomplishments on the field, his greatest joy came from time with his family.

Funeral Services will be held at Milledge Avenue Baptist Church on Sunday, September 4, 2016 at 3:00 pm with a reception to follow.
