Romaine John Spell, 74, of Watkinsville, died April 21, 2006. He was born February 19, 1932 to R.J. and Minnie Bailey Spell. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Naomi Booker and Vera Broadhurst.
John was a veteran of the U.S. Army and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict. He was later employed by National Biscuit Company in Atlanta. In 1973, he moved to Watkinsville and joined Coleman Whitehead Builders before establishing John Spell Construction Co.
He was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church, served on the Watkinsville Planning Commission and was a member of the Athens Area Homebuilders Association.
John was an avid sports enthusiast who participated at both the high school and collegiate levels.
Funeral services will be Sunday, April 23, 2006 at 4:00 PM at Lord and Stephens Chapel, WEST with Rev. J.B. Reese officiating. Graveside services will be directed by Paulk Funeral Home on Monday, April 24, 2006 at 2:00 PM at Evergreen Cemetery, Fitzgerald, GA.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jean; 2 daughters and sons in law, Donna Lynne and Bruce Turner of Lincolnton and their daughters, Kristen and Jaime Turner; Debra Jean and Kerry Doolittle of Watkinsville and their children, Jeremy and Jessica Doolittle; sister, Roma Evans of Fitzgerald; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends at the Lord and Stephens, WEST, Saturday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.
