John Michael "Mike" Smith

Lexington, GA - John Michael Smith, 65, died January 28, 2014.
Born in Charlotte, NC, he was a son of Hannah Argo Smith of Lexington and the late John Edwin Smith.
Mike was a graduate of Oglethorpe County High School after which he served in the U.S. Air Force for 4 years. Following his military service, he was a 1975 graduate of the University of Georgia with a Bachelor's degree in Physics. After graduation, he worked as Fire Marshall at UGA before working as a Nuclear Safety Officer at Georgia Tech and other agencies. He then began an IT career, working as senior computer programmer in Harrisburg, PA and also with Hewlett Packard in Valley Forge, PA. During his career, he received numerous awards and recognitions. Mike was a member of Stevens Grove Baptist Church in Lexington.
Survivors in addition to his mother include his daughter, Heather Lee Smith Tinnel (Brian) of Marietta; son, Jordan Michael Smith (Ashley Thompson), and their son, Connor Michael Smith of York, PA; brothers, William O. "Bill" Smith (Vicki) of Athens, James E. Smith (Kathy) of Bogart and Rev. David G. Smith (Diane) of Memphis, TN; numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Stevens Grove Baptist Church on Friday, January 31, 2014 from 12:00 noon until 1:30 PM. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM with Revs. David G. Smith and Griff Carithers officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
