John Joseph Overbeck, Sr., 90, died July 30, 2013.
A native of Jersey City, NJ, he was a son of the late Albert A. and Rosina Cratz Overbeck and was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Ruth Thornton Overbeck and son, John J. Overbeck, Jr. Mr. Overbeck retired from the United States Army after twenty-three years of honorable service during World War II and the Korean War, including the Battle of the Bulge. Following his military service, he retired from the United States Postal Service and also worked for several years with McLean Trucking in Spartanburg, SC.
Funeral services will be Thursday, August 1, 2013 at 2:00 pm at the chapel of Lord and Stephens, EAST. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
Survivors include his daughter, Carla Hammett; daughter-in-law, Frankie Overbeck of Bristol, TN; brother, Albert A. Overbeck of Hasslett, NJ; four grandchildren, John (Cheeka), Nikki, Mark and Ashley and several great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday for one hour prior to the service.
Lord and Stephens, EAST, is in charge of arrangements.
