John Murray McGuire, Sr.
John Murray McGuire, Sr., lost his battle with cancer on September 8, 2015. Born in New Bedford, MA on May 15, 1929. After graduating from Belmont Abbey Preparatory School, Belmont, NC in 1945; he completed his Bachelor and Master Degrees at the University of Miami followed by PhD in 1954 from the University of Florida. Dr. McGuire worked in upstate New York for General Electric as a research chemist. He was on the original team who developed projection televisions. He then moved to Athens, Georgia in 1971 to begin a career with the Environmental Protection Agency. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Harriet Drake McGuire. John and Harriet together had 6 children who made a large McGuire clan! Patrick McGuire, deceased and his wife Sharon, Hartwell, GA, John M. McGuire, Jr., and wife DeAnna, Valrico, FL, Thomas McGuire, deceased. David McGuire, San Antonio, TX, James McGuire and wife Karen of Johns Creek, GA and Catherine Grimes and husband Todd of Hoschton, GA. Ten Grandchildren and three great grand children.
John was active member of the Knights of Columbus for many years. He was founding member of the Eli Whitney Council of the Knights of Columbus, Past State Deputy of Knights of Columbus for the State of Georgia, he was Past State Master of the 4th degree for the State of Georgia, he was a Knight Commander of the Papal Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher.
He was most recently a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Roswell, Georgia.
The recitation of the Rosary will be at 9:00 proceeding the Funeral Mass at 10:00 both will be celebrated Friday, September 11 at the Catholic Center of the University of Georgia. Burial to follow immediately at Oconee Hill Cemetery, Athens, GA.
