Lexington-John R. Manning, 77, husband of Rita Belle Manning, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at Athens Regional Medical Center .
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 9, 2009 at Lord & Stephens Oglethorpe Chapel at 11 AM with Rev. Curtis Parker officiating.
Born in Calhoun Falls , SC , he was the son of the late William Hubert and Margie Wright Manning. Upon moving to Oglethorpe County in 1955 he became very involved in establishing the emergency services for the county as well as Lexington . He and several friends organized the Oglethorpe County Civil Defense as well as the Oglethorpe County EMA and the Lexington Fire Department. He was the Oglethorpe County Civil Defense Director for more than 40 years, long time Boy Scout Leader and retired from Oglethorpe County High School as a teacher in 1992.
Survivors in addition to his wife include one son and daughter in law: Johnny R. and Pamela Manning of Lexington; sisters and brother in laws: Sylvia and Billy Black and JoAnn and Tommy Martin both of Anderson ; three grandchildren: Chris and wife Carrice Watkins of Sumter, Will Manning, and Samantha Manning of Lexington; two great grandchildren: Joi Watkins and Jordan Watkins of Sumter; One nephew Stephen Black of Anderson ; One niece Laura Ann and husband Andy Tunstall of Anderson.
The family will receive friends Friday, May 8, 2009 from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.
