John Edwin Smith

Lexington - John Edwin Smith, 83, died on Friday, September 28, 2007. Mr. Smith was born in Lexington, Georgia, March 19, 1924, son of the late Oscar L. Smith and Evie Mae Huff Smith.
A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Smith was a member of the Stephens Grove Baptist Church. He was a retired Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy. Mr. Smith served his country for 20 years during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam wars. He was a Navy bombardier during the Normandy invasion and 39 other missions. Among his many medals was the Distinguished Flying Cross. During his military career he served in an air group on five aircraft carriers.
John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Hannah Argo Smith. Sons and their wives Mike Smith; Bill and Vicki Smith; James and Kathy Smith; and David and Diane Smith. Ten grandchildren Heather and Brian Tinnell, Jordan Smith, Sarah Smith Daniel, Stephanie Smith, Amanda and Collier Moon, Andrew and Erin Smith, Hannah Smith, Clara Smith, Noah Smith, and Elijah Smith and two great grandchildren.
Then family will receive visitors at Lord and Stephens, East, Sunday, September 30, from 5-7 pm. Funeral Services will be held Monday, October 1, at 2 pm at Stevens Grove Baptist Church with Rev. John McPherson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews and grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of the church.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Stevens Grove Baptist Church.
