John Albert Crumley, 89, of Colbert, died Monday, May 18, 2015. He was a native and life long resident of Madison County, the son of the late James Franklin and Annie Dora Sorrow Crumley. He was preceded in death by brothers Ralph Franklin and George Loden (G.L.) Crumley and sister Annie Mae Draper.
Mr. Crumley was a member of the Colbert Baptist Church and a charter and founding member of the Colbert Volunteer Fire Department from which he retired from active duty in 1999. He was employed by Rodgers Hoisery Mill for over 20 years, and for almost 30 years at Westinghouse/ABB at his retirement in 1991. As the son of a disabled veteran of WWI, and next younger brother of a WWII serviceman, Mr. Crumley quit school to seek employment to help with the support of his family. After retirement, Mr. Crumley attended Athens Technical College in the GED program and received his GED at age 67. Mr. Crumley enjoyed vegetable gardening, reading, Bible study and being of service to his family and friends.
Mr. Crumley is survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty Meadow Crumley, daughters Christine (Bobby) Brown and Renee (Freddie) Blakey, both of Colbert; brother, James Crumley of Hull; sisters Margaret Mattox and Lois Scaffe of Colbert, and Barbara Causey of Clayton. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews of three generations.
The family will receive visitors at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home in Danielsville, Wednesday, May 20th, 6-8:30 p.m. Services will be held at Colbert Baptist Church, Thursday, May 21st at 2:00 p.m. Revs. Brad Wilson and Blaine Seagraves officiating, and Dwayne Patton will deliver the eulogy. Interment will follow in the Colbert City Cemetery. Flowers are optional. Donations to the Colbert Baptist Church or the givers favorite charity would be appreciated.
