Joe Frank Harney

The Reverend Joe Frank Harney, Sr. passed away Monday, February 1, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Lee Harney and Cynthia Belle McNabb Harney and grandson, Samuel Lawton Haygood.

He was born in Rutherford County, Tennessee on June 28, 1923. After graduation from high school, his military service was an assignment at Fort Lee, Virginia as a mechanical engineering instructor. He attended Middle Tennessee State University graduating with a degree in Biology and worked for the Middle Tennessee Electric Corporation while getting a master's from MTSU. He was the key founder of Belle Aire Baptist Church in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

In 1956 he married Evelyn Stigler and they remained partners in service and ministry for 60 years. In 1959 he completed a second masters in Christian Education from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He served churches as Minister of Education in Kentucky, Missouri, and Georgia before retiring to Athens, Georgia in 2001.

While living in Thomaston, Georgia he established the cancer car ministry in 1972 which continues today to transport cancer patients. He served as secretary of the Cancer Car Ministry for 29 years. He served as an officer and board member for the Thomaston Lions Club and Upson County Ministerial Association. He was the recipient of the Sertoma Club's Service to Mankind Award while living in Thomaston.

He spent countless hours in volunteer service building and repairing furniture. Known as a humble quiet servant leader, his love for Christian education, missions and outreach were hallmarks of his life.

He is survived by his wife Evelyn Stigler Harney, daughter Cynthia Harney Haygood and her husband Daniel Haygood, daughter San Harney Short and her husband Steve Short, son Joe Frank Harney, Jr. and wife Lee Ann Thurston Harney, five grandchildren, Kara Celeste Short, Kyle Harney Short, Caitlin McNabb Haygood, Benjamin Tate Harney, and Tyler Lee Harney and his wife Morgan Hamilton Harney, and one great grandchild, Brooklyn Grace Harney.

The celebration of life service is Thursday, February 4, at 11:00 at First Baptist Church of Athens, Georgia. The internment will be Friday at Cripple Creek Presbyterian Church in Readyville, Tennessee.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Upson County Cancer Car Ministry, 300 Upson Avenue, Thomaston, Georgia 30286.
