Joanne Malcom Thomas, died Friday, May 13, 2016 at Hospice House in Athens. She was born on January 4, 1931 to her parents, Drew Wilson and Rubye Preston Malcom. Later she had another loving mother, Myrtle Bearden Malcom. Joanne was a native of Morgan County and lived in Bishop, GA after she married in 1950.
Joanne graduated from Georgia State College for Women in 1951 with a B.A. in Biology and Chemistry. She worked for the United States of Department of Agriculture for a short while before becoming and full-time wife, mother and homemaker. After the children were in their teens, she returned to the University of Georgia and received a M. Ed. in Science Education. She taught in the Oconee County School System for 18 years.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Drue Jeanne Lupo and husband, John; her sister June Williamson and son, Malcolm Williamson; her sister Louette Malcom; and brothers-in-law, Thomas Elliott, Sr. and M. B. Rice.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, William Jerry Thomas, Sr. and their children, William Jerry Thomas, Jr. and wife Paula; Sara Thomas Shepherd and husband Alan. She leaves four grandchildren, Erin Thomas, Megan Thomas, Walt Shepherd, and Gray Shepherd Green and husband Rex. She is also survived by a great granddaughter, Sara Gray Fuller. She leaves two sisters, Gray T. Malcom and Agnes M. Elliott, a sister-in-law, Mildred T. Rice, and a brother-in-law, Harold Williamson, Sr., as well as a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
Joanne will be remembered for her great love of reading, especially spiritual literature. She was open to and embraced beliefs from various sources. Through sharing of her experience, hope, and strength, Joanne helped many people, young and old, through difficult life challenges.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, Mary 15 at 2:00 PM at Oconee Memorial Park with Rev. Steve Powers officiating. Following the service, the family will return to the home of Jerry, Jr. and Paula Thomas.
