Joann Griswold James, a long-time resident of Athens, GA passed away Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at the age of 73. Born in Chattanooga, TN to the late Edgar F. (Sr.) and Ireta Copenhaver Griswold, she grew up in Murfreesboro, TN and graduated from Central High School. There she earned many honors and was chosen Drum Majorette and Homecoming Queen. Upon moving to Athens, GA with her family in 1966, she became involved with the University Women's Club, Garden Society and Green Acres Community Association. She had many interests but is best remembered for her generosity, kindness and devoted love of family. She will be greatly missed.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, J. Butler James, Jr.; daughters Julie Williams and husband Mace of Watkinsville, GA, Sheri Brake and husband Ron of Eureka, MO, Lisa Delgado and husband Mark of Athens, GA; son John B. James of Athens, GA; grandchildren Justin and Kristin Brake, Matthew Williams; sisters Delores Stack of Katy, TX, Peggy Scarbrough of Galveston, TX and her brother, Edgar F. Griswold of McMinnville, TN.
The family will receive friends at Woodfin Funeral Chapel in Murfreesboro, TN starting at 10:30 am on Saturday, September 15. A graveside service will begin at noon at Evergreen Cemetery. Lord and Stephens EAST in Athens and Woodfin Funeral Chapel are in charge of arrangements.
For those who wish to do so, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to one of her favorite causes, animal rescue and protection. Suggested charitable organizations include United Animal Nations, UAN/EARS (www.uan.org) and the ASPCA (www.aspca.org).
