Jim Iverson Hunt 1929-2016
Jim Hunt succumbed to lung cancer on July 6, 2016 at 87. He passed peacefully surrounded by those he loved most dearly.
A native of Texas, he was born to Herman Ross Hunt and Nora Belle Hunt in 1929. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by five siblings; Chester, Lloyd and Sam Hunt, Marcie Scarborough and Grace Robertson.
He graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1950 and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed a distinguished military career serving in Korea, Germany, Vietnam, Turkey and many stateside assignments including the Pentagon. Serving in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division he came to know many honorable men who have been important to him to this day. He retired as a Colonel in 1980 and fulfilled his lifelong dream of owning Texas farmland, raising Black Angus cattle while also serving as Vice-Principal of Bastrop High School. Upon his second retirement, he continued to use his leadership skills as a volunteer in many worthwhile organizations as well as fishing and golfing in his spare time.
After living in Greene County, Georgia for seven years, he was elected Chairman of the Greene County Board of Commissioners and was named "Citizen of the Year" by the Greene County Chamber of Commerce in 1999.
Jim was a man of great integrity. He had a deep love for God, his family, his fellowman and his country. He was a gifted athlete, an avid fisherman and gardener. Above all he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is survived by Sandra, his loving and supportive wife of 60 years, three beloved children and their spouses; Chuck Hunt and wife, Zanne, Brad Hunt and his wife Karen, Angel Davis and her husband Lee all of Watkinsville, Georgia, six wonderful grandchildren; Scott Quick and his fiancée Adrienne, Cara Sonnier and husband Ean, Megan Kumming and her husband Andrew, Carly Hunt, Lydia Hunt, Haley Davis and two delightful great grandsons; Miller and Baby Sonnier. He is also survived by his siblings John and Joe Hunt, Inez Wade, Billie Hall, Sue Leverette and Gwen Verma and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family thanks St. Mary's Hospice Care for their excellent comfort and support during this trying time.
A celebration of life will be held on July 18, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at the Catholic Center, UGA 1344 Lumpkin St., Athens, Georgia.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation, 1004-A O'Reilly Ave. San Francisco, CA 94129, the American Cancer Society, or to the Charity of one's choice.
