Jesse Mercer, Jr., age 90, passed away July 1, 2021. Jesse was born on October 31, 1930 to the late Jesse Sr and Ruby Mercer. He was also preceded in death by the love of his life, his precious wife Pat, his brother Charles Mercer of Bessemer, Alabama, and his sister Albertine Stewart of Prattville, Alabama.
Born and raised in Mangham, Louisiana, Jesse lived in Watkinsville, Georgia most of his adult life.
While attending Mangham High School, Jesse excelled in sports and was a standout baseball pitcher. After serving in the Air Force, he attended Louisiana Tech under a full athletic scholarship. Jesse was the first person ever awarded a full scholarship under the Louisiana Tech baseball program where he still owns the record for the best ERA in Louisiana Tech baseball history. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Biology and had a rewarding and successful career as a Fish and Wildlife Biologist for the USDA Soil Conservation Service.
Jesse was knowledgeable and passionate about nature and wildlife. Some of his favorite pastimes were hunting, fishing and gardening. His sons are forever grateful for all the time their Dad spent with them enjoying the great outdoors.
Jesse is survived by two sons: Shane Mercer (Carol) of Watkinsville, Georgia and Barry Mercer (Donna) of Warner Robins, Georgia; one grandchild, Diana Mercer of Duluth, Georgia, three step grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Fern Oliver of Shreveport, Louisiana and his brother, J. W. Mercer of Winnsboro, Louisiana.
A memorial service will be private.
