Athens - Jesse Marvin Cawthon, 80, died September 7, 2007. He was the son of the late Jesse Sanders and Mattie Bond Cawthon. A native of Jackson, Georgia, he had lived in Athens since entering the University of Georgia in 1944. After graduating from the University in 1948, he became the Office Manager of Russell Daniel, Inc., and retired from that position in 1982.
He was married to the former June Brice. After their retirement, they traveled extensively in this country and abroad.
A member of the First United Methodist Church, he served in a number of capacities. In addition, he was a Meals-On-Wheels volunteer and for years acted as the coordinator of the Tax Counseling Program for the Elderly. He was inducted into the Internal Revenue Service Volunteer Hall of Fame in 1996. Through the years he was a member of the Athens Jaycees, a life member of Optimist International, the Evening Optimist Club and the Golden "K" Club.
In 1993, he was given the Inspiration Award by the Community Council on Aging and the Athens Clarke County mayor and commissioners.
Survivors include his wife, June; his brother, Sanders Cawthon, of Hendersonville, N.C., and Sanders' wife, Bernice; his sisters-in-law, Gussie Cawthon of Jackson, Ga., and Lois Craft of Elberton, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at Athens First United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM. There will be a reception immediately following the service.
