Jerry Patrick Murphy, age 77 passed away Saturday, March 10 at his home in Athens. He is survived by his wife of 6 years, Gail Murphy, son Michael Murphy of Austin, TX, step-daughter Kelly Seguin of Daytona Beach Shores, FL, step-sons Glenn Alex, of Athens, GA and Gregg Alex of Salt Lake City, UT, and 8 step-grandchildren. His son Kevin Murphy preceded him in death in 2001.
Jerry was born in Quitman, Georgia and was the youngest of three children. Sports were his passion as he was an excellent athlete and played tennis and minor league baseball. He served in the US Navy before getting his AA degree from the University of FL. He worked with NASA during the Apollo program. When the program ended he went back to school at the University of GA to get both his BA and ME degrees. He enjoyed coaching baseball at Cedar Shoals High School where he taught Senior English for 18 years before retiring in 1994.
He will be sorely missed by his many good friends and his family. Honoring his wishes there will be no funeral.
