Jerry Ted Canupp

October 5, 1936 — March 6, 2025

Statham

Jerry Ted Canupp passed away peacefully at home with his beloved wife Jacque by his side on March 6, 2025, at the age of 88. Jerry was well known for many accomplishments in his life. Above all, he will be best remembered for his love for family and friends, his abiding smile and his kind and gentle heart.

Jerry was born on October 5, 1937, in Gainesville, GA to John Iverson and Sally Harrington Canupp. He spent his childhood and adolescence in Gainesville, moving to Athens, GA to attend college. Jerry made many friends and good memories at the University of Georgia, graduating with bachelor degrees in Education and Landscape Architecture.

Upon graduation, Jerry accepted a job as City Planner of Midland, TX. Jerry made a great life for himself in Texas but still had Georgia on his mind.

Destiny and a longing for home brought Jerry back to Georgia in 1963. He took a position as architect with H. Boyer Marx, eventually co-owning the company.

While living in Atlanta, he became enchanted by a beautiful young neighbor, Jacque Russell. After a brief courtship and engagement, they would spend 52 years together as husband and wife.

It was during this time that Jerry joined the Air National Guard and flew around the world in service of his county.

In 1979, Jerry joined the Army Corps of Engineers and embarked on a career of service that would last for 34 years.

Despite his strong devotion to the Corps, which required frequent travel and long commutes, Jerry always found time for his family.

Anyone who knew him well could see that Jacque was the love of Jerry’s life. After 5 years together, they welcomed their daughter Holly into the world. Nothing made Jerry happier than spending time with Holly.

Buford, Madison, Savannah and Athens were among the places Jerry called home during these wonderful years spent with his family and close friends.

Among Jerry’s other passions were the architecture of Frank Loyd Wright and the Porsche 911, both of which he spoke of fondly and often.

After his retirement from the Corps, Jerry and Jacque moved to Statham, starting a new chapter of life filled with time spent in their cabin in Highlands, NC and doting over their grandchildren, Betsy and Beau.

Jerry lived a long and happy life, marked by his faith in God and the kindness he shared with all who knew him. His legacy will endure in the hearts of those who loved him.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Jacque, daughter Holly Canupp Belger, husband Nathaniel (Nat), grandchildren Elizabeth Harrington (Betsy) and William Beaumont (Beau), brother Jack Douglas Canupp (Carol), Don Mitchel Canupp (Jennifer) and brother in law John Thomas Deakins.

Jerry was a member of First United Methodist Church in Athens, GA.
