Jean Cooke Strickland, 85, of Athens, GA went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 13, 2013. She was a native of Sandersville, GA and a longtime resident of the Atlanta area. Her paternal grandparents were native of SC and maternal grandparents of Washington County, GA. She was predeceased by her husband, William E. (Bill) Strickland, sister, Dortha Cooke Bryan and brothers Murphy Cooke and Corbett Cooke, Jr. She attended G.S.C.W. in Milledgeville, GA from 1945-1946.
She moved to Atlanta in 1950 and was employed by the State Revenue Department where she met her husband Bill Strickland of Hapeville, GA. They were married in August 1950. She retired from Delta Airlines after a 17 year career. She is survived by daughter, Kay Strickland Baugher (Rob), Homewood, AL; son, William Perry (Bud) Strickland, St. Simons Island, GA; daughter, Carol Ann Strickland Hurd (Bubba), Marietta, GA; three grandchildren, Robert Woodard (Woody) Baugher III ( Dana), Hannah Baugher Armstrong (Michael), and Richard Strickland Hurd; six great grandchildren, Arden, Esther, Chloe, and Haddon Baugher and Kai and Penelope Armstrong; a sister-in-law Mary Cooke of Sandersville, GA; many nieces and nephews; and a host of loving and caring friends. Jean and Bill found St. James Methodist Church at the age of 71 after they retired and moved to Athens, GA
Their circle of friends increased by a large number and their lives were changed.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Lord and Stephens WEST at 11 AM with the Rev. Bill Curington officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, November 16, 2013 from 10 until 11 AM.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that memorial donation be made to the Beech Haven Baptist Church Mission Fund.
