Jean Hulsey Purcell, 89, died December 29, 2024.
A native of Habersham County, she was a daughter of the late Ezra and Eunice Perry Hulsey and the widow of Loyd Kenneth Purcell. She was also preceded in death by seven siblings, Clara Hulsey Rudeseal, Rudolph Hulsey, Jeff Hulsey, Herbert Hulsey, Margie Hulsey Barnett, Miniard Hulsey, and Everett Hulsey. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Phillip Foil.
Jean lived in the Athens area majority of her life and was a member of Winterville First Baptist Church. She retired from the University of Georgia after 20 years of service. Majority of her years at the University she worked in the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Jean truly enjoyed gardening and she was quite good at it – her garden was a true showcase of her extreme talent. She also enjoyed knitting, sewing, painting, watching Georgia football, and the Atlanta Braves.
Funeral services will be Friday, January 3, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the chapel of Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, EAST with Dr. Rick Standard and Pastor Seth Wood officiating. Interment will follow at Winterville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM at the funeral home.
Survivors include her daughter, Paula Purcell Foil of Winder; granddaughters, Ashley (Seth) Wood and Beth (Cullen) Winkler; five great grandchildren; her sister, Thenia Hulsey Tilson, brother, Julian Hulsey, and many nieces and nephews.
Flowers are optional. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
