Jean T. Hancock, 80, passed away on Sunday, September 11, 2011.
A native of Barrow County, she was the daughter of the late Loy Fulton and Bytha Thomas Thompson. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Charles Robert "Red" Hancock, Jr.; a brother, Doyle Parks Thompson; sisters, Winnifred Christian and Betty Sue Hutchings.
Mrs. Hancock retired from Harold's Hatchery after 20 years of service as the office manager. When her children were in school, she was very active in PTA on the local and state level. She was involved within her community and primarily by caring for and assisting her neighbors. She would take them to doctor appointments, to visit their friends and to any other place they needed to go.
Mrs. Hancock was an active member of Winterville United Methodist Church where she served as Church Treasurer and on numerous committees. Her church family was an important part of her life.
Mrs. Hancock also loved her family. Her children and grandchildren were very important in her daily life. She was affectionately called "Mama Jean" by her grandchildren and many others as well. She enjoyed cooking for her family and no one wanted to miss a meal that she prepared. Biscuits were her specialty.
She was a very devoted and loving wife. The last few years of her husband's life, she took care of his every need and she wanted it no other way. She was a very kind and compassionate person and loved by many.
Survivors include her daughter Teresa H. Cumuze and her husband, Mike, of Watkinsville, and her son, David L. Hancock of Winterville; grandchildren, Kelli Cumuze, Kristen Cumuze Feutral, Mick Cumuze; great-grandchildren, Kaleigh Feutral and Colton Feutral; sisters: Peggy Thompson Wall of Bogart and Joyce Thompson Keyfer of Roswell; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, September 18, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Winterville United Methodist Church with Rev. Tac Coley officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Hospice, 1021 Jamestown Boulevard, Watkinsville, GA 30677, Winterville United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Children's Home, 500 S. Columbia Drive, Decatur GA 30030 or the charity of ones choice.
