Jean Watson McLean Gibson ,93, of Athens, passed away on January 20, 2020 after a long and happy life. She is the daughter of the late Fred and Hortense Watson of Lamar, South Carolina, graduated from Lamar High School as valedictorian of her class and received certification in business from Winthrop University, Rock Hill, South Carolina.
In 1948, she married Sam McLean and they had two children, Jeanie McLean Allen and Fred McLean. Sam founded and owned the McLean Insurance Agency in Athens. After His death in 1972, she assumed president of the company, much to its success.
Jean married Gilbert Gibson of Vidalia, GA in 1976 and they travelled on numerous vacations around the world. She enjoyed many activities which included camping, swimming, water skiing, golf , athletic events, music and reading. One of her greatest pleasures in life was her successful talent in art. She attended workshops, exhibited paintings in many galleries and enjoyed friends in the art world. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, a charter member of Green Acres Garden Club, in which she was awarded a lifetime membership in the Garden Club of GA.
She was preceded in death by Sam McLean, husband, Gilbert Gibson, husband, Jeannie Allen, daughter, Pat Thorton, sister, Saralyn Killian, stepdaughter, Judson Killian, stepson-in-law.
She is survived by her son, Fred (Renee) McLean, son-in-law, Frank Allen, mother of her grandsons, Pearl McLean, grandsons, Stuart (Beth) McLean, Tavis (Mandy) McLean, P.A., brother-in-law, Bill Thorton, grandchildren Scott Allen, MD, Kelly (Naveen) Allen, PhD., stepson Howard (Angela) Gibson , step grandson, John Killian, step grand daughter, Elizabeth Killian (Jimmy) Wilkes and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends in the gathering room at Athens Covenant Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, 29th, from 2:00 to 4:00. Graveside services will be Thursday, 30th, at the Evergreen Memorial Park, 11:00. Pastor Mark Harper will officiate.
