Jean D. Duke, 77 of Athens, died May 31, 2014.
Born in Bradenton, FL, she was a resident of Atlanta for most of her life. Mrs. Duke moved to Lake Oconee in 1998, where she resided until 2005 at which time she moved to Athens. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Garrett and Erogene Haynes DeRamus; her husband, Garland Thomas Duke, Jr.; and her daughter, Kathryn Duke Durkee. She was a homemaker for most of her life and will be remembered as the most loving, generous and grace-filled mom, grandmommy and great-grandmommy.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 2:00 PM at St. John United Methodist Church, 550 Mt. Paran Road, Atlanta, GA 30327 with The Reverend Dr. G. Gil Watson and The Reverend Dr. Brent Ward officiating. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday at the church from Noon until 1:30pm.
Survivors include four children, Karen Duke (Fred) Schuller of Watkinsville, Garland Thomas (Shonda) Duke, III of Peachtree Corners, Steven William (Ashley) Duke of Cumming, Carol Duke (Charlie) Rymer of Windermere, FL; son-in-law, Wentworth X. "Sonny" Durkee; two sisters, Margaret "Peggy" Lane of Kissimmee, FL and Susan "Bunny" Wash of Greenwood, SC; eight grandchildren, Ashley Jean (Jake) Lowery, Garland Thomas Duke, IV, Martha "Marti" Sarah Elizabeth Duke, Jordan Christina Duke, Elizabeth "Eliza" Ashley Duke, Macie Jean Duke, Charlie Duke Rymer and James Hayden Rymer; great granddaughter, Lyla Karen Lowery; and many nieces and nephews.
