Jarrell Jackson “Jackie” Garrett, Jr., 67, of Athens, died August 16, 2022.
Born in Chambers County, Alabama on April 28, 1955, he was the son of the late Jarrell Jackson Garrett, Sr. and Beatrice Hester Garrett and was preceded in death by his son, Jarrell Jackson Garrett, III.
Jackie had a magnetic personality and loved all people. He was president of his senior class in Roanoke, Alabama and attended Southern Union State Junior College in Wadley, Alabama. Jackie, or “Ivory Jack” as he was known on stage, started his music career by playing in local bands and later joining the Vassar Clements Band. While on tour, he met Jerry Farmer, who then became his manager. With the help of Jerry, Jackie received national recognition in country music. Jackie appeared with country music greats including: Gene Watson, Boxcar Willie, Hank Williams, Jr., Jerris Ross, Ronnie Milsap, and so many more.
Jackie was an active member of Winterville First Baptist Church and enjoyed involvement with his Sunday School class, singing in the choir, and fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ. He retired as a router with Clarke County School District in 2013, allowing plenty of time to be “Papa” to his grandchildren, who he absolutely adored.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Allison Browne Garrett; daughter, Lauren Barnett and her husband Shaun of Athens and grandchildren, Sam Tracy, Brady Barnett and Millie Barnett.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 12PM on Friday, August 19th followed by services in the chapel at 2PM with Dr. Lex Bowen officiating.
Flowers are optional. Memorials may be made to Winterville First Baptist Church Food Pantry.
