Winterville - James Valco Bates, 85, husband of the late Rachael Christian Bates, died Saturday, June 16, 2007 at the St. Mary's Hospice House.
A native of Clarke County, he was the son of the late John Alvin and Mattie Roland Bates. He was a self employed as a paint contractor. He served his country in US Army during WWII.
Survivors include his daughter: Elaine Johnson of Callahan, FL; son: Michael Bates of Athens, GA; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held 11AM, Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at Bates Cemetery, Whitehall Road, Athens, GA, with Rev. Curtis Lee Hammonds officiating. Visitation will be held tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.
