James Cristo Sharoff passed in peace on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at the age of 84. James, known to his friends as “Sharoff,” was born in Hudson, Michigan on June 9, 1934 to James and Lydia Sharoff.
He is survived by his loving wife, Wilda and celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary three days before his passing. Sharoff is also survived by his sister, Vonda and her son Rick Rodriguez of Sarasota, FL. He was a proud stepfather to Jennifer (Chris) Brackman of Athens, GA and Roger (Sharon) Lents of Calvert City, KY. Sharoff had six grandchildren: Luke, Grace, and Lee Brackman of Athens, GA as well as Evan (Tamra), Chaz, and Tyson Lents of Calvert City, KY. In addition, he was a great-grandfather to Karson Lents and Kalan Whiteside.
He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict from 1952-1956, at which time he was stationed in Adak, Alaska. After his service, he played Minor League Baseball with the Baltimore Orioles, jump-starting his love for sports. From there he ventured to Nashville, Tennessee where he was employed by Cumming Signs for 30 years, a company he loved, and met his wife, Wilda. He traveled the country and often spoke of seeing all 50 states, a feat he was proud of. In 1986, Sharoff and Wilda relocated to Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, a season of life in which he enjoyed entertaining friends and spending time at the Golf Course and Beach Club. In 2007, Sharoff and Wilda made their last move to Athens, GA to be closer to family. He was a proud supporter of his grandchildren in all their endeavors. He especially enjoyed watching them play sports at Monsignor Donovan Catholic High School and into their college years. He frequented the YMCA and made lasting friendships through the Men’s Bible Study and First United Methodist Church.
Sharoff was loved by many and left a lasting impression on all he met. A celebration of his life will be held at First United Methodist Church in Athens, GA at 1:00 pm on Friday November 2nd, 2018. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Monsignor Donovan Athletics or the YMCA, both located in Athens, GA.
