Dr. James “Jim” Clarence Price, 89, of Athens, GA, passed away on February 16, 2022.
Jim was born on November 20, 1932, in London, AR to the late Clarence Ulysses and Edna Mabel (James) Price. He was a 1948 graduate of London High School. He attended the College of the Ozarks for 2 years in their pharmacy program before transferring to the Little Rock campus of the University of Arkansas, where he lived with his Aunt Ruby, to complete his pharmacy degree. He then pursued a Master’s degree at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. He completed his studies with a doctorate from the University of Rhode Island in 1963. He married Patricia Elizabeth Picken on Oct. 7, 1961. In 1968, he accepted a professor position at the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy, where he taught undergraduate students and mentored many graduate research students until his retirement in 2010.
Dr. Price was a specialist in industrial pharmacy practices and a member of the American Pharmaceutical Association. In 2004, he was awarded a Fellow in Research by the American Pharmaceutical Association. He enjoyed mentoring graduate students and helping students grow in both their professional and personal lives. Dr. Price remained close to many of his graduate students, continuing to offer advice and encouragement, up until the time of his death.
He was the consummate gentleman, holding the door for others or finding ways to help in any way he could. He loved to tinker, often frustrating Pat by fixing broken appliances she wanted to replace. You could find him most evenings reading the paper or one of his many magazines and was a wealth of knowledge on any topic. He also loved to feed and watch the birds that visited his backyard feeder and was often creating new contraptions attempting to stop the bird-food thieving squirrels.
In his later years, he took great pride and joy in his role as Papa. He enjoyed doting on all seven of his grandchildren and spending time surrounded by his family.
Jim is survived by his children Nancy Elizabeth Scarbrough (Mike), Lori Jean Tribble (Arthur), James Winthrop Price (Sandra) and Gregory Warren Price (Paula Frances) and 7 grandchildren.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Home Instead for helping him stay independent at home for as long as possible and to the wonderful staff at Highland Hills Memory Care and St. Mary’s Hospice Team for their loving care and support to Jim and his family.
A private graveside service will be held. A celebration of life service will be scheduled at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave. Floor 17 Chicago, IL 60601, or at alz.org ; to the St. Mary’s Foundation to support the wonderful people and work they do at Highland Hills Village; or to the University of Georgia, College of Pharmacy at rx.uga.edu .
