James Carroll Mathews, age 93, of Winterville, died on Friday, January 4, 2013.
A native of Athens, Mr. Mathews was the son of the late Fletcher C. and Ethel Thornton Mathews. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Dills Mathews; sisters: Mildred Goolsby and Fay Craft. He served his country in the US Navy and retired from A&P Company where he worked as the produce manager. He was a very devout Christian and an active life long member of First Christian Church of Athens. Carroll was a very passionate wood working craftsman and until this past fall was still making furniture.
Survivors include his niece: Tricia Fox (Dan Redding) of North Carolina; great nephew: Adam (Kris) Fox of North Carolina; several nieces and nephews of North Carolina; cousin: Julie and Dave Phlegar of Watkinsville and very special friend Doug and Sandy Bradshaw and their children Victoria and Mason all of Watkinsville.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 6, at the chapel of Lord & Stephens East. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.
