James Gordon "jerry" Smith

Athens - Jerry Smith, 79, died Wednesday, July 8, 2009.
The family will receive friends Saturday, July 11 at Lord & Stephens East Chapel from 1 until 2PM, with the funeral service following the visitation at 2PM with Rev. Bill Ricketts officiating. Burial will follow at Sandy Cross Cemetery.
A native of Oglethorpe County, he was son of the late Frank Gordon Smith and Lena Matthews Smith and father to the late Wayne Smith. He retired from the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department as a Captain. Jerry was a former co-owner of Master Grave Service, member of the Athens Civitan Club and the Mount Vernon Masonic Lodge #22. He was an avid gardener and was affectionately know as "Good Daddy" by his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife 60 years, Annelle Steele Smith; children: John David Smith of Athens, Tommy (Leah) Smith of Augusta, Linda (Jack) Smith Mitchell of Athens; grandchildren: Mike (Christy) Mitchell, Jeff (Kandi) Mitchell, Laura Mitchell, Anna Leigh Smith, Blake Smith and a number of nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Prince Avenue Baptist Church Building Fund, 2131 Ruth Jackson Road, Bogart, GA 30622.
