James R. Garland, 50, died May 29, 2013.
James was born September 20, 1962 to Christine S. and Jesse Garland, who was a decorated soldier of WWII and former postmaster of Martin, GA.
James was a graduate of Stevens County High School and received his B.S. Education and B.S. History from the University of Georgia and Master of Arts from American Public University. He wrote editorials for the Athens Banner Herald and will be remembered for his great dry sense of humor. He was a longtime member of the NRA and was an avid firearms shooter. He was a proud member of the Republican Party and also ran for Athens-Clarke County Commissioner twice.
Funeral services will be Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 3:00 PM at the chapel of Lord and Stephens, EAST. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1pm until service time.
James was a devoted husband of twenty-one years to Patricia Ann Garland. He was preceded in death by his parents but is survived by many family members in the Toccoa area.
James was loved by and well-thought-of by everyone who knew him. He was the kindest and most gentle man. He is already missed by us all.
Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association or a charity of your choice.
