James Carl Fenner, 79, passed away at home on December 30, 2012. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1933, he was adopted by Ida Howard Melvin and Ormel Melvin. James is preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Joseph Rubash, and son-in-law Kevin Stripland Glover. James is survived by Mary, his wife of 53 years; daughters, Nancy Leckie of Athens, Georgia, and Linda Glover of Lawrenceville, Georgia; a son, David Fenner and wife Diane of Fairfax, Virginia; grandchildren Anthony and Anna Leckie; Zoe, Maya, and Carson Fenner; and brother, Charles Rubash and wife Cindy of Portland, Oregon, and many nephews and nieces.
As a young man, James served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Following his military service he attended San Jose State College and was a member of Alpha Phi Omega, a service fraternity.
James was employed by Globe Union (Johnson Controls) in San Jose, California, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Atlanta, Georgia. Later employment was with Southern Erectors in Atlanta. After retiring, he and Mary moved to Athens, Georgia, to be closer to children and grandchildren.
Early in his life James was active in Boy Scout and later as an adult Scouter for Troop 531 in Mableton, Georgia, serving in various ways and as a Scout Master for several years. As an adult leader he earned his Silver Beaver award and National President's Scoutmaster Award of Merit.
