Comer - James T. "Tom" Compton, 76, died Monday, March 29, 2010 at his residence.
A native of Comer, he was the son of the late Neal A. and Jessie Lou Cooper Compton. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Michael Gene Compton and brothers and sisters: Waco D. Compton, Hulda Mae Petty, Wayne Compton, Amanda Weart and Neal Compton, Jr. Tom was the owner and operator of Tom Compton Trucking as a dump truck driver. Throughout his working career he was a logger, bulldozer operator, an all around heavy machine operator and an airplane pilot. He served his country in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 2, 2010 at 2PM at Vineyards Creek Baptist Church with Dr. Larry Green officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers and granddaughters will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Survivors include his children: James Thomas "Jimmy" Compton, Jr. of Comer, Mary Ann Reese of Hull, Robert F. Compton of Comer; former wife: Mary Compton Bielicki; friend and companion: Dorothy Bales; sisters: Charlotte Cooper Cozens of Clarksville, Betty Hartsfield of Carrollton; grandchildren: James Henry Compton, Justin Whitehead, Bobby Compton, Asa Compton, Jesse Compton, Trey Compton, Gracie Strickland, Chizra Reese, Brock Compton, Wyatt Reese and Cody Compton and three great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 31, 2010 and Thursday, April 1, 2010 from 7 until 9 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Vineyards Creek Baptist Church.
