James Douglas Carmichael

December 8, 1933 — June 6, 2024

Danielsville, GA

James Douglas “Doug” Carmichael, 90, passed away peacefully at his home in Danielsville, Georgia on June 6, 2024. Doug was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Born on December 8, 1933, he was a lifelong Georgia native.
Doug attended Cook County High School, where he excelled in multiple sports and helped the football team win the state championship in 1949. He served for four years in the US Navy in the Marshall Islands and married the love of his life, Sally Atwater Carmichael during his last year of service. After leaving the Navy, Doug attended the University of Georgia, where he earned his Bachelor, Master and Specialist degrees in Special Education. He started his career in Moultrie as a teacher and coach, before moving to Clarke County to develop and lead their Special Education program and eventually retiring as Director of Special Education.
Doug loved his family deeply, especially his wife, and always had a large personality that radiated through to every family member. He had a unique sense of humor and was always able to keep the family in line. Doug also enjoyed tending to his farm, a dream that was realized in 1969 when he purchased land and moved his family to Danielsville. He had a strong connection with animals of all types, including his bird dog, Pat, a quail named Flush, and his Texas longhorn, Measles, just to name a few. He had a love for quail hunting, and, according to his wife, was a “darn good shot.” In addition, he was a devout Georgia football fan, holding season tickets for over 50 years and attending every home and away game for 40+ years. Doug even served as a recruiter for Vince Dooley’s Junkyard Dawgs for several years. As long as the family was happy, the cows were in the fences and the Dawgs were winning, he was content.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Sally Atwater Carmichael; his children, Kay Carmichael Anderson, Kathy Carmichael Pruett, Doug Carmichael II, and Kam Carmichael Bennett; his grandchildren, Will (Hannah) and Reid (Melanie) Anderson, Thad and Priscilla Pruett, Matet Carmichael, and Emma Kam Bennett; and his seven great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Patrick and Otha Pinell Carmichael; his brothers, Robert E. and Phillip A. Carmichael, and sister, Patricia Carmichael Parrish; and sons-in-law, Tommy W. Anderson and Stanley T. Pruett.
The family will hold a private service and memorial at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish to express sympathy consider making donations to the Madison County Library or Madison Oglethorpe Animal Shelter in Doug’s memory.
Lord & Stephens Funeral Homes, Danielsville, Danielsville, GA is assisting the family with the arrangements. www.lordandstephens.com
