Jackson Jones, Sr.

Warren Jackson Jones, Sr., 85, of Watkinsville, passed away on December 17, 2023. Born on July 30, 1938, he was the son of the late Charlie Mae Jones and Willie Eugenia Warren.

Jackson was a kind jokester who thrived in social situations and never met a stranger. He worked at Atlanta Gas Light Company for 15 years before becoming a full-time farmer. He spent most of his time on his tractor, gardening, and tending to his chickens and cows. Jackson was a Deacon at many churches including Mars Hill Baptist Church, Living Word Baptist Church, Briarwood Baptist Church, and most recently, Fellowship Baptist Church.  He played and coached in the church softball league at Mars Hill Baptist Church and Briarwood Baptist Church. He was an honorary member of the Oconee County FFA and a big supporter of the various cow shows where he helped tremendously behind the scenes. In his spare time, Jackson could often be found flying his paraplane or enjoying motorcycle rides, often joined by his wife, Shirley.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Anne Tiller, Faye Roberts, and Josephine Marion.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Shirley Dickens Jones; children, Jackie Kidd (Tim), Jane Hillsman (Charles), Jennifer Nelms (Bill), J. Jones (Kelly); grandchildren, Audrey Bell Brown (R.C.), Nick Hillsman (Samantha), Kasey Hillsman Dickerson (Wesley), Julie Hillsman, Taylor Jones, Tanner Peterson, Britni Peterson Toole (Jerrid), Caleb Jones; great grandchildren, Anabell Brown, Ransom Brown, Sadie Hillsman, Beau Dickerson; several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Lord & Stephens, West, Watkinsville with Brother Larry Davison officiating. Interment will follow at Oconee Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends the evening prior from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.

Pallbearers for the service include Caleb Jones, Nick Hillsman, R.C. Brown, Charles Hillsman, Bill Nelms, Jerry Powell. Honorary Pallbearers include Tim Kidd, Wesley Dickerson, and David Dixon.
